THE ANATOLIAN SHEPHERD DOG

The ANATOLIAN SHEPHERD DOG (ASD) is a very large, strong, and independent breed of dog. Anatolians are usually calm, observant, and extremely intelligent.  They thrive in a large, fenced, outdoor environment where they have a "job" to do.

Avg. Ht: 26"-32"

Avg. Wt: 80 lbs-150 lbs"

Anatolian Shepherds are primarily utilized as livestock guardian dogs (LGD) for various types of farm and ranch livestock. They also make exceptional family and property protectors; but at the same time, ASDs require strong, well-disciplined leadership from their owners.  Early socialization and obedience training is recommended.

During the daytime hours, ASDs may appear at times to be in a deep sleep but they will alert instantly to any unusual movement or noise within their territory. During dusk and evening hours, ASDs seem more alert, and you will notice them patrolling “their” property and “their” herd. They like to “keep watch” over the herd from the highest vantage point available. These dogs behave as a guardian type of dog, and should not be confused with the "herding" type dogs.  ASDs take their job seriously – patrolling and protecting “their” herd from different types of predators - two legged or four legged; and particularly nighttime predators, such as, skunks, raccoons, porcupines, coyotes, and opossums.

With their country of origin being Turkey, Anatolian Shepherds have to be able to “brave” the outdoor elements as they guard their herds. The ASD’s coat will vary depending on the heredity:  very thick and short coats with a very dense undercoat; short and slick coats; or, "rough" coated with longer, shaggy, and thick hair.  And, yes, they do shed!  Coat colors are diverse with the most predominant color in the ASD breed being fawn with a black mask on the face. Other colors include: biscuit and white, liver, white, gray, red, brindle, and blue.
